Online ecommerce giant Amazon has ordered hundreds of compressed natural gas trucks to help further improve its emissions profile.

So far, according to Reuters, Amazon has ordered more than 700 CNG class 6 and class 8 trucks with engines supplied by Cummins-Westport. A total of 1,000 CNG engines have been ordered.

CNG trucks emit 27% less carbon dioxide compared to conventional diesel. According to the California Air Resources Board, when fueled with renewable natural gas, the carbon intensity score can drop to roughly -475 depending on fuel sources. Renewable natural gas is produced from decaying plant and animal matter.

Amazon is embracing a diverse approach in lowering its emissions. In 2019, the company made headlines after announcing an order for 100,000 electric delivery vans through Rivian.
