Nikola Corporation (NKLA) has announced it has secured a Sourcewell cooperative contract which aims to simplify the purchasing process for the OEM's zero-emission Class 8 semis for public agencies.

For reference, Sourcewell is a self-funded government organization founded in 1978 whose aim is to facilitate a cooperative purchasing program that "harnesses the collective purchasing power of more than 50,000 participating agencies."

Sourcewell streamlines the purchasing process for these agencies with pre-negotiated, competitive contracts. This allows for "government, educational, and non-profit organizations to secure cost-effective and efficient purchasing solutions." In short, customers will save time and money towards the purchase of Nikola's semi lineup.

This new partnership between Nikola, via its HYLA energy brand, and Sourcewell, grants any public agency more direct access to the manufacturer's Class 8s without having to navigate the sometimes complicated purchasing process thanks to "ready-to-use, Sourcewell-vetted contracts."

This contract applies to both of Nikola's advanced Class 8 semi zero-emission powertrains: battery-electric (Tre BEV) and hydrogen fuel cell (Tre FCEV).

Last May, Nikola unveiled the Tre BEV 2.0 at the ACT Expo in Las Vegas. A number of improvements were made, such as improved range and various software updates.

Nikola says the BEV 2.0 has been made "future proof" thanks to introducing significant software commonality with both the battery and operating systems found on its hydrogen fuel cell counterpart, allowing customers to get software updates over-the-air.

The company and Tom's Truck Station recently opened a new hydrogen modular refueling station in Santa Fe Springs, California. Nikola has a goal of having 14 refueling stations up and running by the end of this year.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell & BEV Survey
The following survey was sent as a link in an email cover message in February 2023 to the newsletter lists for Overdrive and CCJ. After approximately two weeks, a total of 176 owner-operators under their own authority, 113 owner-operators leased or assigned to a carrier and 82 fleet executives and 36 fleet employees from fleets with 10 or more power units had completed and submitted the questionnaire for a total of 407 qualified responses. Cross-tabulations based on respondent type are provided for each question when applicable.
