RIZON, Daimler Truck's Class 4-5 medium-duty battery-electric truck brand, has delivered four new vehicles to portable restroom rental company Diamond Environmental Services at its San Marcos, California facility.

Funding for the Daimler-engineered trucks came from the Short-Haul Zero-Emission Truck Pilot Project administered by the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District.

The company recently hosted an event celebrating the trucks' delivery attended by several community leaders and city officials, among them San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones and city council member Ed Musgrove. Time was allocated for attendees to take part in a ride and drive to receive a first-hand look at the trucks' battery technology, safety features, and tight turning radius for improved city driving maneuverability.

Diamond opted for the cabover flatbed configuration for two of its four e18L model trucks, all of which boast DCFC and Level 2 AC charging capabilities for up to 104 kW and 14.9 kW charging rates, respectively. RIZON says the trucks can reach 160 miles on a single charge.

“RIZON trucks are perfect for our daily local operations and align with our environmental and sustainability goals. Thanks to San Diego County's incentive programs, we could economically make the transition to electromobility,” said Alex Fortunati, CEO of Diamond Environmental. "Our drivers have given positive feedback, praising RIZON trucks' comfort and safety features, as well as a quiet, emission-free ride. They particularly appreciate torque and collision avoidance features for stop-and-go city driving."

Diamond plays a significant role in the portable restroom business in Southern Cal, providing services for onsite construction sites, outdoor festivals like the Super Bowl, and the Coachella Music Festival.

California offers several incentives for fleets to help with the transition towards zero-emission vehicles, such as:

  • Innovative Small e-Fleet (ISEF) Program that offers qualifying small fleets a minimum voucher of $120,000 toward an all-electric Class 4-5 RIZON Truck.
  • Region-specific incentives, like the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District’s grant program utilized by Diamond Environmental to purchase four RIZON trucks.
  • Through the end of the year, RIZON and its EV-certified dealer partners are offering a free Siemens VersiCharge AC charger with every RIZON truck purchase or lease as a bonus to electric transition.

With the next Trump administration assuming office next month, California has promised the continuation of (state level) EV tax incentives and overall infrastructure build-out to accommodate the growing number of electric vehicles, both commercial and passenger, on the road as a direct result of California Air Resources Board (CARB) mandates in various stages of implementation.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell & BEV Survey
The following survey was sent as a link in an email cover message in February 2023 to the newsletter lists for Overdrive and CCJ. After approximately two weeks, a total of 176 owner-operators under their own authority, 113 owner-operators leased or assigned to a carrier and 82 fleet executives and 36 fleet employees from fleets with 10 or more power units had completed and submitted the questionnaire for a total of 407 qualified responses. Cross-tabulations based on respondent type are provided for each question when applicable.
