20250603 Mack Trucks Donates Electric Refuse Chassis To Río Hondo College To Advance Heavy Duty Ev Training

Mack Trucks announced the donation of a 2022 Mack LR Electric refuse truck to Rio Hondo College in Whittier, Calif., on Tuesday.

It's the first donation to Rio Hondo. The truck will provide hands-on training for students learning to safely work on heavy-duty battery electric vehicles.

"As the industry continues exploring alternative fuel solutions, including battery electric vehicles, this donation will help prepare the next generation of technicians for careers in sustainable transportation," says Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. "This partnership aligns Mack Trucks' commitment to sustainability and technical education."

Rio Hondo's EV program is led by professor John Frala. The college previously worked with Volvo Group through the Volvo Low Impact Green Heavy Transport Solutions (LIGHTS) program.

"This donation will give our program a significant boost as we expand from light-duty electric vehicles into the heavy-duty market," Frala says. "Our students will gain invaluable experience working with cutting edge technology that will prepare them for the future of transportation maintenance and repair."

Hydrogen Fuel Cell & BEV Survey
The following survey was sent as a link in an email cover message in February 2023 to the newsletter lists for Overdrive and CCJ. After approximately two weeks, a total of 176 owner-operators under their own authority, 113 owner-operators leased or assigned to a carrier and 82 fleet executives and 36 fleet employees from fleets with 10 or more power units had completed and submitted the questionnaire for a total of 407 qualified responses. Cross-tabulations based on respondent type are provided for each question when applicable.
