Mack Trucks has announced its featured vehicles for this year’s WasteExpo, taking place at the Las Vegas Convention Center from May 6-9. A total of four vehicles from the manufacturer will be on display, including two examples of the pure battery electric Class 8 LR Electric. The other two vehicles will be the Mack MD7 and the Mack TerraPro. Both are diesel-powered.

The LR Electric truck, described by Mack as “the next generation Class 8 LR Electric refuse model,” boasts a standard 376 kWh battery capacity, which translates to 42 percent more energy for additional range between charging. There are dual electric motors, totaling 448 horsepower and 4,051 lb-ft of instant torque. The energy comes courtesy of four Nickel Magnesium Cobalt Oxide (NMC) lithium-ion batteries, which are charged via a 150 kW, SAE J1772-compliant charging system. The batteries provide power for all vehicle systems and accessories thanks to the 12V, 24V, and 600V circuits.

Additionally, the LR Electric features a two-stage regenerative braking system capable of recapturing energy that is produced from the hundreds of times the vehicle stops on its daily garbage pickup routes. Other relevant vehicle features include Mack-produced front and rear axles rated up to 20,000 lbs and 46,000 lbs, respectively. It also comes equipped with the Mack 150/151 axle carrier, which does not have differential locks, dual right- and left-hand steering, and LED headlights.

The Class 7 Mack MD7 4x2 is powered by a Cummins diesel with 300 hp and 660 lb-ft on tap, and is paired to an Allison-sourced six-speed transmission. Its front axle taperleaf suspension is rated at 12,000 lbs while the rear multileaf setup has a 21,000 lbs maximum rating. Another useful feature is the clear back of cab and top of frame rail that is designed to simplify body builder modifications. The MD7 has a GVWR rating of 33,000 lbs and is exempt from the 12 percent Federal Excise Tax (FET).

Lastly, the TerraPro, which can serve as both a refuse vehicle or a concrete pumper, has 355 hp and 1,260 lb-ft, and is also linked to an Allison six-speed gearbox. It has a 20,000- and 52,000-pound front/rear axle rating, respectively. Other features include Mack’s tandem carrier with a power divider lockout, and the GuardDog Connect and Over The Air systems.

Only the LR Electric will be available for demonstration drives, which are scheduled from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on May 7 and 8 at the West Hall Diamond Lot.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell & BEV Survey
The following survey was sent as a link in an email cover message in February 2023 to the newsletter lists for Overdrive and CCJ. After approximately two weeks, a total of 176 owner-operators under their own authority, 113 owner-operators leased or assigned to a carrier and 82 fleet executives and 36 fleet employees from fleets with 10 or more power units had completed and submitted the questionnaire for a total of 407 qualified responses. Cross-tabulations based on respondent type are provided for each question when applicable.
