In July 2024, bp pulse, BP's electric vehicle charging business, began construction on one of the nation's first publicly accessible medium- and heavy-duty truck charging hubs in Ontario, Calif. The microgrid-powered site is now nearing commissioning, in line with the project's original timeline.

The charging station, constructed by TravelCenters of America (TA) following its own acquisition by BP in May 2023, is part of a California Energy Commission pilot program.

A few days ago, bp pulse said in a LinkedIn post that the ultra-fast truck fleet charging station will soon be live and open to the public. No official launch date has been announced, and Clean Trucking has contacted bp pulse for confirmation.

The site originally opened in early 2025 for passenger EVs and currently has four 400-kilowatt chargers. The new upgrades are substantial, including the crucial Megawatt charging systems that are necessary for Class 8 BEV trucks, like the Tesla Semi

Per the post, fleets will benefit from the following:

  • Ultrafast chargers: Four 400 kW CCS pull-through bays and two 750kW Tesla MCS pull-through bays
  • Reliable service: Charging points on key transport routes with high uptime targets & no blocking fees

"This truck charging station is strategically located at the intersection of two of the nation’s busiest highway interstates and is a prime location to serve early-adopter electric truck fleet operators," said Debi Boffa, CEO of TA, back in July 2024. "We are proud to take a leading role in bringing this infrastructure to our fleet customers and other professional drivers."

The company said the TA Ontario site represents only the first phase of a broader medium- and heavy-duty charging buildout, and continues to plan additional projects across Southern California by evaluating new freight corridors as demand for electric truck charging is expected to increase in the years ahead.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell & BEV Survey
The following survey was sent as a link in an email cover message in February 2023 to the newsletter lists for Overdrive and CCJ. After approximately two weeks, a total of 176 owner-operators under their own authority, 113 owner-operators leased or assigned to a carrier and 82 fleet executives and 36 fleet employees from fleets with 10 or more power units had completed and submitted the questionnaire for a total of 407 qualified responses. Cross-tabulations based on respondent type are provided for each question when applicable.
