Hexagon Agility, a business of Hexagon Composites, has announced it's received an order for renewable natural gas (RNG) fuel systems worth $18.7 million from a "major" refuse fleet based in North America. This company's identity was not provided in the official press release.

“We are proud to enable this refuse fleet to achieve cost-effective, carbon-negative transportation without compromising their existing business operations,” says Eric Bippus, executive vice president of sales & systems development at Hexagon Agility. "Refuse fleets face the challenge of heavy payloads and unique and demanding operating environments. Making the switch to RNG offers fleets a proven and profitable option that reduces their carbon footprint - and provides a reliable and cost-effective solution for critical fleet operations.”

RNG that is captured from organic material in agriculture, wastewater, landfill, or food waste is capable of producing carbon-negative results when fueling vehicles, such as refuse and recycling trucks, transit buses, and short- and long-haul trucks.

The production process consists of removing carbon dioxide from biogas and increasing the methane concentration to a comparable level to that of fossil natural gas. This results in RNG’s ability to be distributed through existing gas pipelines and natural gas fueling stations. RNG is also compatible with vehicles that already have natural gas engines.

Sourced domestically, natural gas vehicles (NGVs) fueled by RNG are more cost effective and meets the EPA's Clean Trucks Program efficiency requirements.

Data compiled by the U.S.-based The Transport Project states that in 2023, 79% of all on-road fuel used in natural gas vehicles was RNG. The data further confirms that this figure grew by 16% compared to 2022 volumes. This translates to an increase of 234% over the past six years.

The company confirms the fuel systems will be delivered to the client in the third quarter of this year.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell & BEV Survey
The following survey was sent as a link in an email cover message in February 2023 to the newsletter lists for Overdrive and CCJ. After approximately two weeks, a total of 176 owner-operators under their own authority, 113 owner-operators leased or assigned to a carrier and 82 fleet executives and 36 fleet employees from fleets with 10 or more power units had completed and submitted the questionnaire for a total of 407 qualified responses. Cross-tabulations based on respondent type are provided for each question when applicable.
