Zero-emission battery-electric Class 8 semis are not something Americans see on the road everyday, especially those who don't live in states like Arizona, California, and Nevada where these rigs continue to undergo testing.

However, the current so-called "sweet spot" for battery-electric commercial rigs is the light- and medium-duty segment, such as the Rivian-built Amazon delivery vans and Motiv Electric Trucks.

The Calif.-based company, together with Canadian customer Purolator, have announced the latter's fleet of Motiv trucks recently completed a collective total of 1 million kilometers (~627,000 miles).

"Purolator is a shining example of what’s possible when a company commits to decarbonizing their fleet," said Scott Griffith, CEO of Motiv. "What started with a five-vehicle pilot program is now a well-established part of the business, and their drivers, communities they serve, and the overall environment are better for their leadership in electrification. We are honored to call them a partner."

Earlier this year, Purolator confirmed another milestone with its Motiv fleet: more than two million packages delivered. This is significant for the freight, package, and logistics provider, who is currently working towards electrifying 60% of its last-mile delivery vehicles.

To date, Purolator has taken possession of 60 Motiv-built EPIC Class 5 step vans, which have successfully been put through the paces of Canada's harsh winters. An additional 24 vehicles are due for delivery this summer.

Since its 2009 founding, Motiv has put over 400 vehicles on the road that have driven more than 6 million miles and delivering over 300 million pounds of products.

Additional Motiv customers include Cintas, Bimbo Bakeries, Shasta Linen Supply, and Vestis.

Motiv points out, according to internal diagnostic data, it achieved a 98% uptime in 2023, resulting in the reduction of over 15 million pounds of C02 and about a ton of PM 2.5 articulate matter.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell & BEV Survey
The following survey was sent as a link in an email cover message in February 2023 to the newsletter lists for Overdrive and CCJ. After approximately two weeks, a total of 176 owner-operators under their own authority, 113 owner-operators leased or assigned to a carrier and 82 fleet executives and 36 fleet employees from fleets with 10 or more power units had completed and submitted the questionnaire for a total of 407 qualified responses. Cross-tabulations based on respondent type are provided for each question when applicable.
