DHL Supply Chain has received its first battery-electric Tesla Semi Class 8 truck—an initial step in what’s expected to become a larger fleet—as the company pushes toward its goal of cutting absolute CO2e emissions to 29 million metric tons by 2030 and reaching net-zero by 2050.

The Semi enters DHL's fleet after a successful Livermore, Calif., pilot in which it logged more than 3,000 miles and averaged 1.72 kWh per mile while hauling 75,000 pounds over a 390-mile route.

"Our pilot of the Tesla Semi exceeded expectations, proving its ability to efficiently haul a typical DHL freight over long distances on a single charge," said Jim Monkmeyer, president of transportation for DHL Supply Chain North America. "Integrating the Tesla Semi into our fleet is an important step toward achieving our decarbonization goals and delivering more sustainable solutions for our customers. With its range of up to 500 miles, the Semi unlocks opportunities that were previously beyond the limits of heavy-duty EVs, and we’re excited to partner with Tesla to make that a reality."

From its new Central California base, the truck is currently handling daily 100-mile routes, sipping power so efficiently it charges just weekly. Fully loaded, it can push 500 miles and is projected to cut annual emissions by roughly 50 metric tons.

DHL says it plans to add more Semis to its fleet once Tesla begins series production, which is due to get underway in 2026 following several several years of delays.

"DHL has been a great partner to work with, and we appreciate their early and longstanding support for the Semi program. We are excited to support their deployment in North America, and their experience as a trusted logistics provider will help us make the product even better for future global markets,” added Dan Priestley, director of Tesla's Semi program.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell & BEV Survey
The following survey was sent as a link in an email cover message in February 2023 to the newsletter lists for Overdrive and CCJ. After approximately two weeks, a total of 176 owner-operators under their own authority, 113 owner-operators leased or assigned to a carrier and 82 fleet executives and 36 fleet employees from fleets with 10 or more power units had completed and submitted the questionnaire for a total of 407 qualified responses. Cross-tabulations based on respondent type are provided for each question when applicable.
