What you need to know:

  • Volvo launches new electric heavy-duty trucks in Europe, supporting its net-zero emissions 2040 goal
  • FH Aero Electric offers up to 700 km range, with e-axle tech and megawatt fast charging in ~50 minutes
  • Updated FH, FM, FMX Electric models improve flexibility and productivity, with up to 470 km range and vocational capability
  • No U.S. launch planned, with Volvo continuing to offer the VNR Electric (275-mile range)

Volvo Trucks announced today the launch of one new and three updated battery-electric, heavy-duty trucks for the European market as part of its goal to reach its net-zero emissions target by 2040

There is no indication these trucks will arrive in North America because they're not homologated for this market. Instead, Volvo currently offers a single battery-electric truck, the VNR Electric, which delivers a driving range of about 275 miles on a full charge.

First up is a new long-haul electric model, the FH Aero Electric, capable of traveling up to 700 km (nearly 435 miles) on a single charge.

Alongside this debut, the company unveiled upgraded versions of its FH, FM and FMX Electric heavy-duty trucks. The next-generation lineup features improvements in flexibility, productivity and driver comfort, while offering ranges of up to 470 km (292 miles), expanding the viability of electric trucks across a broader range of transport applications.

FH Aero Electric extended range

The manufacturer offered further details of the FH Aero Electric with extended range. The model uses a new e-axle driveline that frees up space for additional onboard batteries, significantly increasing energy capacity without compromising performance.

Equally important, it's compatible with the Megawatt Charging System (MCS), enabling ultra-fast charging. Volvo says replenishing the battery from 20% to 80% takes around 50 minutes, allowing drivers to recharge during mandated rest breaks in the EU and helping maintain high operational productivity.

"We're really sharpening our offering here. We are broadening it and making electric solutions possible for an even wider range of transport assignments, and also adding a cutting‑edge electric truck with a range of up to 700 km. This means we can fully match the business needs of our customers. It has never been easier to replace diesel trucks with electric ones," says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks. "We stand firm in our belief that electric vehicles will deliver a large part of the world's truck transport in the future. With the amazing performance of all our new trucks, it's easy to see why."

The OEM has also overhauled the driveline in its next-generation FH, FM and FMX Electric models, aiming to make them more versatile for a range of uses.

The redesigned system allows the trucks not only to operate efficiently on the road but also to power auxiliary equipment—such as concrete mixers, hook lifts and refuse collection units—without the need for additional motors or external systems.

These capabilities are enabled by an integrated gearbox power take-off that can be used while the vehicle is in motion, improving operational efficiency. As previously noted, the updated models offer driving ranges of up to 470 km (about 292 miles), with charging from 20% to 80% taking roughly 65 minutes.

Volvo confirmed all four vehicles will be rolled out "step by step" to international markets beginning this year. Pricing was not announced.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell & BEV Survey
The following survey was sent as a link in an email cover message in February 2023 to the newsletter lists for Overdrive and CCJ. After approximately two weeks, a total of 176 owner-operators under their own authority, 113 owner-operators leased or assigned to a carrier and 82 fleet executives and 36 fleet employees from fleets with 10 or more power units had completed and submitted the questionnaire for a total of 407 qualified responses. Cross-tabulations based on respondent type are provided for each question when applicable.
