What you need to know:

  • Electric eTrailer technology Range Energy adds electric propulsion, regenerative braking, and onboard battery power to standard trailers without new charging infrastructure or driver changes
  • Extreme winter testing validation the production eTrailer completed cold weather testing at Smither's Winter Proving Ground, proving performance in sub-zero, snow, and ice conditions
  • Improved safety and stability results showed better traction, braking, and control, with smoother handling than conventional trailers
  • Fleet-ready scalability testing confirms real-world reliability, efficiency gains, and readiness for commercial deployment

It's been since last summer that we've received updates from Mountain View, California-based Range Energy, the developer and manufacturer of the eTrailer system.

Range's system adds electric propulsion and onboard high-voltage power to standard semi-trailers. It integrates a 250 kW motor, drivetrain components, regenerative braking, and up to 300 kWh of batteries to cut fuel use, eliminate diesel for refrigerated units, and power onboard systems—without changing driver routines or requiring new charging infrastructure.

Clean Trucking spoke with Range Energy President and CTO Ali Javidan, a former Tesla Engineer, last year at the ACT Expo where he provided us with a walkaround tour of his company's innovative and highly advanced battery-powered "smart" trailer.

Today, the company announced that its eTrailer has successfully completed rigorous, multi-year winter testing, conducted this year at the Smither's Winter Proving Ground in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This is the same facility used by automakers and other commercial vehicle OEMs for winter vehicle handling and validation.

The company conducted prototype testing last year. Its latest campaign, conducted in sub-zero temperatures and rough road conditions, tested production-ready systems, specifically traction control, regenerative braking, thermal management, and overall vehicle handling.

Other core tests included hard braking, tight cornering, and sudden lane changes that are meant to mirror the toughest winter driving challenges. Check out the video below to see the production-spec eTrailer in action.

eTrailer testing results

The findings showed that the production eTrailer system delivers greater stability and driver control in extreme cold. On snow- and ice-covered surfaces, it handled complex maneuvers with noticeably smoother performance, while conventional trailers in the same conditions were more prone to instability.

"Completing this second testing program on a production-ready system is a critical milestone for Range as it shows our system can maintain top performance in real-world operations," said Collin MacGregor, VP of product, safety, and systems at Range. "We've demonstrated not only that our technology delivers meaningful performance improvements, but that it does so reliably even in the toughest environments that fleets face. That level of validation is essential as we scale manufacturing and bring this platform to the road."

Hydrogen Fuel Cell & BEV Survey
The following survey was sent as a link in an email cover message in February 2023 to the newsletter lists for Overdrive and CCJ. After approximately two weeks, a total of 176 owner-operators under their own authority, 113 owner-operators leased or assigned to a carrier and 82 fleet executives and 36 fleet employees from fleets with 10 or more power units had completed and submitted the questionnaire for a total of 407 qualified responses. Cross-tabulations based on respondent type are provided for each question when applicable.
