You hear about and see them all the time. Passenger vehicle hybrids, such as the Toyota Prius, have been on the market for years and continue to be hot commodities.
But what about hybrid commercial vehicles? Last month, ReVolt revealed the first details of its heavy-duty diesel-electric hybrid rig.
Today at the 2025 ACT Expo in Anaheim, California, Harbinger Motors is debuting the first-ever series hybrid medium-duty vehicle and its specs are impressive.

Utilizing a plug-in hybrid setup, power comes courtesy of a 1.4-liter inline-four cylinder gasoline engine paired to a 800V generator and a 50-gallon fuel tank. The combustion engine is, essentially, a range extender used to recharge the 140 kWh or the optional 175 kWh battery system.

The combined powertrain produces up to 1,140 lb-ft of torque and 440 horsepower. The 800-volt architecture enables rapid charging at any DC fast charger. How rapid? Try an 80 percent charge in just one hour.
The company already manufacturers a pure battery-electric MD vehicle that's already on sale. A few current customers include THOR Industries and Bimbo Bakeries USA.

“Medium-duty vehicles serve an incredibly diverse range of applications, just like the fleets and operators that rely on them,” said John Harris, co-founder and CEO of Harbinger. “There are some fleets whose needs simply can’t be met with a purely electric vehicle—and we recognize that. Our hybrid is designed for use cases and routes that go beyond what an all-electric system typically supports. The series hybrid delivers the benefits of an electric drivetrain, along with the added confidence of a range extender when needed.”
Harbinger is now accepting pre-orders and deliveries are set to get underway next year. Final pricing has not been announced.
