What you need to know:

  • Harbinger launches Harbinger Industria, offering standalone energy storage and auxiliary power systems.
  • Airstream first customer, using Harbinger batteries in the Trade Wind 27FB travel trailer.
  • Trade Wind 27FB energy system, 18.5 kWh battery, 600W solar, 5,000W inverter for off-grid power.
  • Automotive-grade batteries, made in California with Panasonic cells for reliable, managed energy.

Harbinger isn't wasting any time making moves in 2026.

The Garden Grove, Calif.–based manufacturer of battery-electric, medium-duty commercial trucks announced the expansion of its battery technology into standalone products. The new business line, called Harbinger Industria, will sell battery systems directly to customers for energy storage and auxiliary power applications.

The first customer is Airstream, the iconic maker of riveted aluminum travel trailers. Earlier this week, Airstream unveiled its new Trade Wind 27FB, which features a Harbinger power system designed to support off-grid camping, run air conditioning, and integrate with solar power.

The Trade Wind 27FB's next-generation energy system delivers up to 18.5 kWh of battery capacity—the largest in Airstream's lineup—paired with a 600W rooftop solar array for efficient renewable energy capture. A fully inverted electrical system with a 5,000W inverter supports 50-amp service, allowing dual air conditioners with heat pumps to run seamlessly even when camping off-grid and away from traditional shore power.

"By introducing automotive battery systems to the RV market, we're helping set a new standard for off-grid performance. At the same time, we are demonstrating that high-quality, American-made battery systems can be delivered at a price point that makes sense for customers," said John Harris, co-founder and CEO, Harbinger.

At its California facility, Harbinger develops and builds its own high-voltage battery systems from the ground up. By keeping design and manufacturing in-house, the company claims it tightens control over quality while improving reliability and cost efficiency. The systems use lithium-ion cells supplied by Panasonic Energy, and are engineered to meet demanding automotive-grade standards.

The Harbinger Power System, the company explains, actively manages battery health, temperature, and power flow to ensure reliable operation. Automated controls prevent over-discharge, while liquid cooling protects the battery in extreme weather conditions. Another cool feature, a dedicated display, provides users real-time insight into energy use and available power from batteries, solar, or shore connections.

"The Airstream Trade Wind 27FB has the most capable off-grid electrical system we've ever offered in our travel trailer product line," said Bob Wheeler, Airstream president and CEO. "By integrating Harbinger's industry-leading battery technology in our travel trailers, our customers can stay off-grid longer with confidence."

Hydrogen Fuel Cell & BEV Survey
The following survey was sent as a link in an email cover message in February 2023 to the newsletter lists for Overdrive and CCJ. After approximately two weeks, a total of 176 owner-operators under their own authority, 113 owner-operators leased or assigned to a carrier and 82 fleet executives and 36 fleet employees from fleets with 10 or more power units had completed and submitted the questionnaire for a total of 407 qualified responses. Cross-tabulations based on respondent type are provided for each question when applicable.
