The zero-emission commercial vehicle market may be going through a period of reorganization, but progress hasn't slowed.

NFI is a case in point.

The Camden, N.J.–based supply chain solutions provider confirmed earlier this month that it has surpassed a major clean-transportation milestone, logging more than 10 million miles with its battery-electric Class 8 trucks, a fleet that primarily consists of Freightliner eCascadias and Volvo VNR Electrics. The achievement underscores how electric heavy-duty vehicles are now moving beyond pilot programs and into everyday freight operations.

The milestone highlights the company’s ability to deploy and scale zero-emission transportation while maintaining the reliability customers expect from diesel-powered trucks.

What began for NFI as a pilot program in 2019 has grown into a fleet of more than 100 battery-electric trucks operating across Southern California.

Through its partnership with the JETSI Project, the company has built out supporting infrastructure, including 38 fast chargers, a dedicated electric-vehicle maintenance facility, and an on-site microgrid combining solar generation with energy storage.

"Reaching 10 million miles reflects our commitment to helping customers meet their emissions goals while supporting cleaner communities," said Sid Brown, CEO of NFI. "Our customers are looking for practical ways to reduce Scope 3 emissions, and this milestone reflects our ability to deliver sustainable solutions that perform at scale."

NFI says it continues to push its electric trucking strategy beyond the West Coast. A new fleet of 10 battery-electric trucks now operating in Virginia is expected to log roughly 3 million zero-emission miles over six years, giving customers a practical way to test cleaner freight options while cutting Scope 3 emissions.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell & BEV Survey
The following survey was sent as a link in an email cover message in February 2023 to the newsletter lists for Overdrive and CCJ. After approximately two weeks, a total of 176 owner-operators under their own authority, 113 owner-operators leased or assigned to a carrier and 82 fleet executives and 36 fleet employees from fleets with 10 or more power units had completed and submitted the questionnaire for a total of 407 qualified responses. Cross-tabulations based on respondent type are provided for each question when applicable.
